N.J. lawmaker wants to create domestic violence offender registry

By Matt Friedman/The Star-Ledger
on November 25, 2013

TRENTON — New Jersey residents who have abused their spouses and partners would be just as easy to look up as sex offenders under a bill about to be introduced by a state lawmaker.

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Mercer) wants to create a publicly accessible registry of those found to have committed domestic violence.

“It’s pretty dangerous to date a repeat offender and often times the person isn’t aware of the history,” Gusciora said. “You have instances where the person is very nice, and they’re dating, and when they’re living together that’s when the violence would happen. At least this would give some kind of warning if the person has a history of violence.”

Gusciora, who first mentioned the idea to New Jersey 101.5 FM, said he plans to introduce the legislation soon. The registry would be similar to the one that was established by Megan’s Law for sex offenders.

I have noticed that abusers are often serial abusers and an unsuspecting new spouse or partner finds out too late that the person they partnered with is abusive. Sometimes in small towns the word gets around however in large urban centers they can slip through the cracks.

If I could legally have a slam site for the bunny boiler I caught it on the tail from - I would. But - unfortunately - women/men get sued when they fight back and try to warn the next man/woman.

National Institute of Justice:

Megan’s Law has had no effect on time to first rearrest for known sex offenders and has not reduced sexual reoffending. Neither has it had an impact on the type of sexual reoffense or first-time sexual offense. The study also found that the law had not reduced the number of victims of sexual offenses.

Journal of Law and Economics

Public notification may scare away those inclined to be future offenders. But it appears to actually increase the likelihood that convicted sex offenders will offend again.

My bunny boiler had a history of stalking women and violence - I would have run after the first date. I figured out he was fucking nuts after the third date - but I still had to move 450 miles away to get relief. Unfortunately - the Don't Date Him Girl site was taken down or I would have publicly outed him for the psychotic freak he was.

It's different from where I sit.

As a Democrat I think the justice system should be punitive and nothing is more punitive then being on a life long list. As a Democrat I have no use for things like 'rehabilitation' and 'paying your debt to society'. We should also have a murderers registry, an assault registry and a burglary registry. The more the better. The public has a right to know, and people convicted of these terrible crimes should be properly branded so its as hard as possible for them to reintegrate into society after any incarceration.

exactly what it means. You do the crime you do the time. During that time I would hope that there were the funds in our criminal system to rehabilitate and treat the wrong doer with behavior, mental health, drug rehab, or whatever problems they may have to return a free and useful person to society.

8. But they don't change

They only change their victims. A scarlet letter of V for Violent - nope. But a place for men and women to note- Okay this one has broken the windows, slashed the tires, made 100 calls in two hours before . .. That is golden.

I always think of my friend P who dated the Federal Marshall that went off the rails for the 4th time. He was the 4th victim. When an ADA gets his bathroom window shot out by a violent sociopath and nothing can be done - that's a problem.

Do you know - I moved down here in January 2006 and the RO expired November 13, 2008 and that very day - bunny boiler called me ten times.

And yes - I have zero empathy because he terrorized me. He deserves to be made fun of, derided, poked at, and dismissed as worthless.

But I will tell my nieces all about the signs to look for with sociopathic men. Maybe my peace comes from being married to a former Italian Marine sharp shooter?

I know that's not popular these days but all a R.O. Is - is a piece of paper. I had a knife when he smashed in my windows. Now I have something more with someone who won't make mistake. It's hard if you aren't a woman who has experienced it to understand and I forgive you for that. you can't empathize with the fear and terror as its outside your experience.

When the rate of domestic violence repeat offenses goes up, like it did for repeat sexual offenses under Megan's Law, I will try to forgive you too.

That whole inch and a mile thing. What will the next list have? I knew the day that the sex offender list was made into law, that sooner or later there would be more lists. Today it is Domestic Violence. What will tomorrow bring?
