N.J. high school students charged with hazing, sex crimes over locker room attacks

Several Wall (N.J.) High School students have been charged with hazing and sex offenses related to attacks in the football team’s locker room in September and October last year, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday. The specific number of students was not disclosed by the prosecutor’s office because they are all juveniles and juvenile matters require strict confidentiality, the office said in a statement. No adults have been charged.

The charges are the first following the hazing scandal at Wall — which first came to light following stories by NJ Advance Media in early November — that led the school district to abruptly cancel the football team’s season in the midst of the playoffs. The district has also handed down several administrative suspensions, including seven students suspended in November. The district suspended three coaches and the athletic director shortly after the public became aware of the alleged hazing.
The three Wall football coaches were also police officers, two in Wall and one in Neptune, rosters revealed.

Earlier Monday, NJ Advance Media published a story after viewing one of multiple videos of the alleged locker room assaults. In one of the videos, four teenagers hold their victim in the air and jostle to spread his legs. He eventually twists free and falls to the floor where a fifth attacker appears to poke the victim with a broomstick on his buttocks between his legs. At least four other players stand nearby in the background watching, giggling, and one shouts “Get his legs!”

The students charged include juvenile complaints of hazing, attempted criminal sexual contact, criminal sexual contact, false imprisonment and harassment. Not long after the allegations surfaced, the prosecutor’s office took over the investigation.

In spite of knowing right from wrong, these horrific episodes continue to happen. The perps hardly ever understand that what they did was wrong, cruel, sick. The vicitms have to live with the shame and fear of the attacks.
