N.J. city welcomes children from the war in Ukraine

Jersey City on Monday rolled out the welcome mat to 14 Ukrainian children and their adult guardians whose lives have suddenly been turned upside down by the Russian invasion of their homeland.

Mayor Steven Fulop hosted an informal gathering at City Hall to welcome the Ukrainians to what is their new home – at least temporarily – the city that rises in the shadow of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The mayor offered the services of the city’s Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Immigrant Affairs to the Ukrainian mothers and aunts who suddenly find themselves a long, long way from home.

Carlo’s Bakery sent over cupcakes with blue and yellow frosting, and the younger kids got razor scooters. The older kids got to sit up on the City Council dais. For a little while, the war seemed far away.

Liudmyla Holovko smiled as she watched her daughter, Nicole, zip around the City Council chambers on a scooter. She fled with her daughter to Poland days after the Russian invasion and is staying with her sister in Jersey City. Asked how old she is, Nicole held up four fingers – then gave a high-five to a woman standing nearby as she jumped on her scooter.
