Votes expected on Christie book deal, raises, legal ads
The full Senate and Assembly are to vote on a pair of heavily criticized bills today that would allow Gov. Chris Christie to profit off a book, give raises to select staff and judges, and end the requirement that towns and developers publish legal notices in newspapers.
The measures were introduced last week and rushed through the Legislature before the non-partisan Office of Legislative Services had time to conduct a cost analysis. On Friday, the day after Senate and Assembly committees advanced the bills, OLS published a preliminary analysis that said it was unable to determine exactly what the financial impact would be.
If successful today, the bills will head to Christie’s desk and the governor could sign them into law within hours. Other pieces of legislation often take months or even years to complete that journey.
“This is a rush job,” one critic, David Pringle, said last week, referring to the legal ads bill. “If you wonder why people are losing faith in government, it’s because of legislation like this.”
