Mohawks move toward resolving land claims

James M. Odato

Leaders of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe signed a Memorandum of Understanding with officials from New York State and St. Lawrence County on Wednesday and are working on a similar agreement to end land claim issues with Franklin County.

The agreement outlines terms of a settlement agreement that would provide the Mohawks with a chance to return contested lands to the tribe’s Northern New York reservation and provide the tribe, the county and local governments significant economic benefits in return, according to the tribal council.

The tribe, working with the Cuomo administration, has been working toward resolving land claim issues since Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mohawk elected leaders announced an agreement last year to end a dispute over revenue sharing involving the Mohawks’ Akwesasne Casino in Hogansburg.

“Our tribe and our people have worked toward this agreement for 32 years,” said Chief Beverly Cook of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council. “Our Council is carrying the work from our past leaders forward; we’ve built on each other’s efforts, and we remain committed to a negotiated settlement that benefits our Mohawk people and our neighbors.”
