ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York's homeland security agency is refusing requests from freight railroads to further restrict public information about their crude oil shipments, concluding it's not sensitive security information and will be given to local emergency planners.
Federal officials reached a similar conclusion in June, ordering railroads to give state officials details about oil-train routes and volumes so emergency responders can be better prepared for their duties.
Railroads sought to keep the information secret, arguing that information on oil train routes and volumes are security sensitive. The issue followed a string of fiery accidents. A derailment and explosion in Quebec last July killed 47 people.
Jerome Hauer, Homeland Security and Emergency Services commissioner, told CSX Transportation and Canadian Pacific Railway that New York won't adopt special non-disclosure agreements.

I guess there are also a lot of gun owners around here, talked to some of them when I worked for Scott Murphy.

(204,779 posts)WASHINGTON Fifteen to 30 trains, each carrying at least 1 million gallons of North Dakota Bakken crude oil, pass through the Hudson Valley each week, according to information provided to the state by CSX Transportation.
The freight trains are moving along the CSX River Line through densely populated areas of Rockland and Orange counties as they head south from Albany to refineries in New Jersey and elsewhere.
State officials released the information this week to organizations that filed requests under the Freedom of Information Law after announcing last week they have denied a request by freight railroads to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
<snip>
The railroads began providing the information to the State Emergency Response Commission on June 7 under an emergency order signed by U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
