New concerns over 'contaminated soil' project just across Arthur Kill from Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The controversial Rahway Arch project came under new scrutiny last week when the New York attorney general's office joined others questioning plans to reuse tons of contaminated soil to cap chemical sludge on a site just across the Arthur Kill from Staten Island.
In a letter on Aug. 26, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office asked the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to take pains to ensure full disclosure and review of the remediation plan.
"Staten Island residents and their elected officials have questioned whether the Rahway Arch project will provide effective and reliable remediation, including whether the project may even exacerbate current environmental and public health risks associated with the site," wrote Lemuel Srolovic, chief of Schneiderman's Environmental Protection Bureau.
