Council liberals question colleagues' Hochul support

Gloria Pazmino

One day after more than a dozen City Council members joined Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Mayor Bill de Blasio to endorse Kathy Hochul for lieutenant governor, other Council members questioned the candidate’s progressive mettle.

Councilwoman Rosie Mendez of Manhattan, one of the more left-leaning members, said calling Hochul a progressive "was a bit of a stretch.”

“Everybody is subject to their own opinions,” Mendez said. “For me, it’s a stretch. Maybe for them it’s not a stretch. I am not going to support someone just because they are a Democratic woman.”
