To take House seat, Recchia will have to overcome Staten Island's 'red borough' voting history

Tom Wrobleski

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - If Domenic M. Recchia Jr. wants to win the 11th Congressional District seat, he'll have to do more than defeat Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn).

He'll also have to overcome Staten Island's "red borough" habit of voting for Republicans for Congress even though Democrats enjoy a healthy voter registration edge.

According to the most recent Board of Elections figures, Democrats outnumber Republicans on the Island, 128,554 to 81,122.

But since 1981, the Democrats have held the House seat here for just two years, when Michael McMahon was elected to a single term in 2008.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – With campaign season getting ready to heat up now that Labor Day has passed, the two-pronged Democratic strategy to wrest the House seat from Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) is coming into sharper focus.

In a phrase: Good cop/bad cop.

On the one hand, you have the nearly $1 million that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has committed to spending on television ads targeting Grimm.
