Knocking Bloomberg, de Blasio touts a ‘transcendent’ moment

Dana Rubinstein
At 11:31 a.m. Friday, as Mayor Bill de Blasio was hailing yet another “transcendent” moment in his administration at a Coney Island press conference, the spokesman for his predecessor emailed reporters with an indignant defense of Michael Bloomberg's efforts to rebuild New York City’s storm-battered homes after Hurricane Sandy.

The timing was not coincidental.

The New York Times on Friday published a blistering account of the Bloomberg administration’s long-delayed effort to help homeowners rebuild after the October 2012 storm—an effort that got bogged down in bureaucratic inefficiency, government contractor incompetence, and good intentions gone awry. Also on Friday, at that press conference in Coney Island, de Blasio and his allies were announcing a “landmark agreement” to rebuild a storm-damaged Coney Island housing project, all the while expounding on how the de Blasio administration was busy rectifying Bloomberg’s mistakes.

“Out of a tragedy, a phoenix is rising,” de Blasio said.
