MoveOn.org Sort of Endorses Teachout-Wu

Will Bredderman

Progressive political action committee MoveOn.org sent an e-mail this morning encouraging New York Democrats to support dark horse gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial candidates Zephyr Teachout and Tim Wu in today’s primary–though carefully avoiding a formal endorsement.

Ilya Sheyman, a former Illinois congressional candidate and executive director of the 16-year-old liberal advocacy group–formed in 1998 in reaction to the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton–sent subscribers to its e-mail list a message entitled “Zephyr Teachout and Tim Wu.” The e-mail recalled a survey of the group’s New York members that showed 73 percent of them wanted to see a challenge to Gov. Andrew Cuomo from the left, and the drama of the Working Families Party convention in June–where the labor-backed third party weighed running Ms. Teachout on its ballot line, but decided to instead endorse Mr. Cuomo after he agreed to pursue a number of left-wing policies in his second term.

You know the ones who say "Well, we'd be more progressive if we could just get more progressive Democrats elected. It's not like we WANT to be conservative corporatist?"

Strangely silent, aren't they. I see lots of prominent Democrats endorising Hochul (Deblasio, Clinton, Schumer)

The worst part about this whole debacle is that it's happening in one of the bluest states. This proves to me that the Democratic party is so entrenched in their rightward shift, and so damned and determined to keep things moving in that direction that they are pulling this propping up of a shitty, corporatist and his even shittier, more conservative running mate, even though a more liberal challenger with a more liberal agenda would be just as likely to win in NY.

I don't think Teachout has a real shot to do anything except make Cuomo look stupid (which I am all in favor of). But Wu winning not only makes Cuomo look like an idiot, but it forces him to have to govern with an actual liberal.
