NYC taxi app service will be for women only

NEW YORK - New York is about to get a new taxi app service – with cabs driven by women for women, according to a report in the New York Times.

Serving New York City, suburban Westchester and Long Island, the latest Uber-like taxi app will be available through an Apple application for smartphones as of Sept. 16, with an Android app to follow. It will be called SheTaxis in the suburbs and SheRides in New York City, due to regulations barring the use of “taxi” in the name.

Women who summon the service will be met by a female driver wearing a hot pink pashmina scarf.

Favored by women leery of getting into hired cars with male drivers or being groped by men on crammed buses, trains and subways, women-only transport can be found in many cities around the world.

if you're not familiar with NYC, we have both taxi cabs, which pick up their fares cruising the streets, and livery cars, which are sedans usually summoned by phone. (It isn't legal for the liveries to pick up street fares but that does happen).

I don't think there's any discrimination just because you prefer using a specific livery company over the rest, in this case, one with female drivers. Choosing to use the services of only one company is very common; companies that need to frequently use them for their employees often contract with only one or two of them exclusively.

As is only taking female fares.

Try setting up an all male driver, male only service and see how far you get with that. By definition, you would be discriminating based on sex. Doing this with an all female driver, female only passengers service I s no different.

Similar to when bars such as McSorley's were required to allow women into the establishment or the same with the lesbian bar on 7th. (I forgot the name.)
