Celebrating for two, Hochul claims underdog status

Jimmy Vielkind

BUFFALO—Kathy Hochul arrived at the Buffalo Irish Center just after 11:30 Tuesday night, when most of the tables were filled with plastic cups of beer and after incumbent State Senator Tim Kennedy, who threw the party, had seemingly thanked every one of the dozens of union leaders, officials and volunteers who filled the ballroom.

"I want to thank all of you for your support, but the election starts tomorrow,” Hochul said, flanked by Mayor Byron Brown. She shook hands with the lingering revelers and was gone minutes after she cast herself as an underdog in the race.

"Considering that yesterday political pundits thought I was going to lose this election, I consider this a very significant victory,” Hochul told Capital. “They thought I was down … because New York City wouldn't respond to my message, and that's where the votes are. So I've overcome some tough odds.”
