High schooler wants this photo for yearbook portrait

Joseph Spector

A Schenectady High School student is gaining national attention for a petition drive he’s started to push his school to let him use this photo for his senior portrait.

Draven Rodriguez told The Daily Gazette yesterday that he wanted something different for his yearbook photo—something his friends will always remember. So he picked his photo—with lasers!—with his cat, Mr. Bigglesworth.

But the school has told Rodriguez that while he can submit the photo to be in the yearbook, he can’t use it as his official senior portrait.

Public Schools are about conformity.

If they let this pass then next year there will be five like it, then everyone will want one and hours will have to be spent by somebody making sure that nothing offensive slips by them, like gang symbols or bigotry or drug related or, well, you know.

This is why they hire a professional photographer for the day and often dictate a dress code for yearbook photos.

Me, I love this pic and hope he gets his way with them!

It would be a wonderful way to remember "Rocky" the cat they had growing up. He lived to be 22 years old and was only a few years younger than them.

Let him have the picture in the yearbook.

HS pictures are bad enough but at least they're all bad in the same way.

He'll just end up as an anonymous laughing stock, an unoriginal one.

I'm pretty sure Draven thought this was just going to be a goofy joke between him and his friends, and then it just blew up. He really is a nice young guy.
