The Real Deal Tax Rebate

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Starting this week, more than one million families in New York could be getting $350 checks in the mail from the state. We've got The Real Deal the new Family Tax Credit.

This is a first-time program being offered this year.

The state's taxation office tells us if you are eligible, you will automatically be mailed a check and you do not have to apply.

The credit applies to 2012 and you have to meet certain criteria:
-You were a resident of the state for the entire year
-You had a child under the age of 17 years old as a dependent
-You had a combined income between $40,000 and $300,000
-You had a tax liability of zero or greater

New York says it has finished mailing all of the $350 rebate checks to families in the state. Meanwhile, scammers are trying to trick people into giving up financial information.

ALBANY – All 1 million family rebate checks have been mailed, the state Department of Taxation and Finance said, but the state is also warning about potential scammers.

The $350 rebate checks should all hit mailboxes by this Friday, the agency said. If you don't get one and think you should, you can check here later in the week to apply for it.

"Dear Taxpayer: Last year's State Budget included this Family Tax Relief Credit. This tax relief is part of New York State's new effort to reduce taxes," the checks say on the stub.

The tax department warned that scam artists have been contacting taxpayers by telephone seeking personal information to "confirm" they are eligible for a tax rebate. The state said that they've received initial reports in central New York of the scam.
