Under Deal, Morelle To Become Interim Speaker, Election Set For Silver’s Replacement

Assembly Democrats emerged from a day-long closed-door meeting on Tuesday to announce a plan that would install Rochester-area Majority Leader Joe Morelle as interim speaker until Feb. 10, when an election for a new leader of the chamber would be held.

Embattled Speaker Sheldon Silver, who faces five counts of federal corruption charges, will either have to resign by next scheduled session day, Monday, or face an ouster from his colleagues.

Silver, up until now, has not said whether he will resign.
