The escape of a small herd of bison from a farm in upstate New York ended badly Friday, with the animals being fatally shot after crossing the New York State Thruway.
Authorities say the 15 bison were killed because they became a danger after crossing the highway.
Three men hired by the farm were cleared to open fire in a stream in woods in the town of Coeymans, about 10 miles south Albany.

(113,282 posts)creatures, they got loose from the slaughterhouse!!), the local constabulary fired 96 shots, hitting cars, houses--not a single bison. finally had the wildlife people come in with trank guns (gee, one would think that would have been the first thing done??)

(86,579 posts)is that because they are very intelligent, they aren't easily rounded up and will thwart the efforts of some of the best wranglers. It's because they are intelligent, they left a slaughterhouse environment after all, don't think they had any intention of being returned.
See my other post but beware that videos at the link are rather graphic but it shows what happens to our bison in the US.

(86,579 posts)It's what they do here too, or they run/drive them for miles back into the park, including newborns who suffer broken legs and other horrible injury and death.

(72,300 posts)The 15 bison had made quite the journey, swimming across the Hudson River and racing along the New York State Thruway, forcing cars off the road, the Times Union Reported. The animals broke through police lines and rushed at nearby people, while helicopters buzzed above.
The herds owner, George Mesick, told the Times Union that there was no chance of getting them back. I just want to get this done with as fast as possible so that no one gets hurt, Mesick said.
So the hunters arrived. Tranquilizers wouldnt work on such large animals with such thick hides, Gallagher said at the news conference. From the Times Union dispatch:
One of the hunters hired guns appeared to have a heated exchange with Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple after the gunfire started and was taken into custody by the sheriff and investigator. Apple said he was concerned about possible harm to people in the crowded area from the rifle shots. The man was later released.
Apple said the scene was turning into the Wild West and he put a stop to it. Apple added: We had shots being fired all over the place. It was not a safe scene.
The animals belong to a farm near Bethlehem, N.Y., that raises buffaloes for meat. A broken fence allowed them to escape, and they eventually made their way from rural to more residential communities, reported WIVB.

(72,300 posts)Those animals must have been insured.
I didn't know the hide was so thick that a normal tranquilizer gun wouldn't work. There should have been something with more firepower that would have worked to tranquilize 'em.

(3,818 posts)HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) Police say two buffaloes that escaped captivity and roamed a central Arkansas city last week remain unaccounted for.
Hot Springs Cpl. Sonia Luzader said Monday that police called off the search over the weekend and there hasn't been any reported sighting of the animals since the herd escaped Thursday. She says the owner was still looking for the buffaloes.
Police believed the 2,000-pound animals remained within city limits last week but said Monday that their location is unknown. The six buffaloes escaped from a nearby farm and spent Thursday running through neighborhoods and eluding authorities.
One of the animals was hit by a car and three were tranquilized.
Hot Springs is a popular tourist spot with natural hot springs, a national park and horse track.

News has said that they think someone purposefully left a gate open so they could escape. Two are still loose.
