New Attica documents detail more brutality during '71 riot

Jimmy Vielkind

ALBANY—Newly released documents about the 1971 Attica prison riot and the violent effort by state and local officials to re-take the facility detail fresh allegations by witnesses who say they were not immediately interviewed about what they saw.

The documents, released Thursday afternoon by the office of Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, detail allegations of guards beating inmates on stretchers and on the ground. According to the Buffalo News, a judge unsealed the 350 pages comprising the second and third volumes of a 1975 inquiry conducted by Bernard Meyer for then governor Hugh Carey. Schneiderman's office, at his order, redacted any evidence, testimony, or witnesses or matters related to or derived from grand jury proceedings. The result was 46 pages, some of which had additional redactions.
