New Yorkers strongly oppose license plate replacement plan, poll shows

New Yorkers overwhelmingly oppose the Cuomo administration plan requiring that motorists turn in their license plates that are more than 10 years old and replace them with new ones for a $25 fee, a poll released Tuesday found.

By a 60 percent to 31 percent margin, voters are against requiring drivers to replace the plates, according to the Siena College survey.

And by an even greater, three-to-one margin, voters said the $25 replacement fee is unfair — with 75 percent expressing disapproval and only 23 percent saying the fee was reasonable.

Meanwhile, 10 percent of New Yorkers say they voted in the recent online poll to select a new license plate design, and another third say they were aware of the poll but didn’t vote. The winning design features a panorama of New York landscapes, including the Manhattan skyline, Montauk’s famous lighthouse, Niagara Falls and the Statue of Liberty.

“New Yorkers of every stripe — regardless of party, region, gender, race, or age — oppose the new requirement to surrender license plates that are at least a decade old for newly designed state license plates,” said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg.

“When it comes to the $25 license replacement fee, New Yorkers are even more united in their opposition. At least two-thirds of voters from every party, region, gender, race, or age group say the $25 license replacement fee is unfair. Bottom line message from voters to state: NO2PL8FEE,” Greenberg said.

Hello, dear heart!

We've had occasion to choose a new design and 'no charge'. But I bet we saved there and paid out somewhere else. Ya simply cannot win!

Peace be to you, lovely one.

To me, it's a huge waste of time, money and resources - not to mention the confusion for those who chose or know their license plate number. Makes no sense to me!

Wishing you a peaceful night as well, my friend...

but there are lots of them in out there in horrible condition. They will be hooting and hollering when all of a sudden they have to fight contested tolls because the readers couldn't read the plate. There lots of crappy versions of plates out there depending on when they were made the coatings come off or the plate delaminates. I have 6 vehicles an all have some different version my daily vehicles plates were issued in 2001.

My plates from 2003 look just fine - though it has an actual name on it that's not mine which is irritating. But I see a lot of them on the road in my travels and I figure that the person must have also gotten them in Washington County in 2003...

with a registered car in NY MUST do. I have no issue with replacing them every 10 yrs or so to keep them in good enough condition to be easily read but this charge is going to hurt the poor car owners, who are struggling with all of the requirements NY has for car owners, the most.

Personally I think the orange and navy blue is ugly (unless you have a navy blue or orange car) so I won't miss them. I voted for the one that won so of course I'm happy enough with the new design from an aesthetic POV. Since we're going to be paying for new plates anyway I think I'll check out the extra cost to go back to personalised ones. At least we'll be able to remember it. :-D

And I especially agree about the orange and blue ones! I did have those back in the '80s when I was first driving, but everybody had those back then and I had a white car (inherited my mother's 1971 Plymouth Duster! ). I'm not thrilled with those I was assigned since they have an actual name with a number. I asked the DMV lady if they shouldn't be saved for someone with that name - but now when I see one on the road, I know that the driver got them in Washington County in 2003! And there's nothing wrong with them - I was just happy they weren't orange - and I know my "name" and number by now!

Plus, I finally have to renew my driver's license this year, as well - and that's expensive enough!

it's certainly up there especially since I got the enhanced since a) we live on the border and b) I found my paternal bio family in Canada and have hope that we'll continue to get to know each other.
