LITTLE VALLEY For the better part of two centuries, the Cattaraugus County seal has always shown an eagle, a sword, a scroll and two women.
It's what's been missing from the seal for the past few decades that has suddenly turned a bit of history into a campaign issue just as election season heats up.
What's missing is clothing specifically, clothing on the upper halves of the aforementioned two women.
The controversy was uncovered Wednesday during a meeting of the Cattaraugus County Legislature, where the aluminum cast seal is prominent. As was first reported by the Olean Times-Herald, two lawmakers said constituents had complained about the images of one woman who appears topless and the other nearly so, and are visible above the chairman's podium in the legislative chambers inside Cattaraugus County Center and on the outside of the County Office Building in Olean.

Some in Cattaraugus County want to change the county seal because of nudity present since the 1970s.

(40,135 posts)the old one is much better. Looks like a prank from Animal House that got by everyone, come on by 1808 people were wearing clothes
Strange they have a couple of other official seals/ w/o people too.

(156,990 posts)I'm sure they have more important things to worry over than the half-naked ladies on the Seal.
This is not one of those things.
I mean, really.

(24,259 posts)There are plenty of famous statues and paintings with women topless some of which are in public view. Society really has to get over this hangup.
I've seen better sculpting than on the seal but the women's breasts being exposed is a big 'meh' for me. Changing the seal will cost taxpayers money, is this really that big a deal with the dirty minded versus improvements that would actually help and/or benefit the community?
