But it can charge 12 bucks for a martini and throw in a dozen oysters for free!

That was the going price around here back in the not too distant past.

3. This presents an interesting conundrum

An Upper East Side restaurant near our apartment in NYC offers $2.50 oysters during Happy Hour (4:00-7:00 pm). Their bar drinks are around $8.00-$12.00.

On the other hand, a seafood market in town sells fresh oysters for about $10.00-$12.00 per dozen. A bottle of vodka costs about $20.00-$25.00. If one liter contains about 34 ounces, that's about 17 drinks making the drinks "cost" about $1.50.

The puzzle is do we stay home and save money or do we go out for some camaraderie (and exposure to Covid!)?

Actually, it's an easy choice.

4. Pennsylvania still has remnants of the 30's.......

the LCB (Liquor Control Board) still rules the sales of alcohol with an iron fist. Until recently you could only by wine and liquor at Pennsylvania owned & operated 'State Stores' and beer could be bought at a 'bar' (draft & bottles, plus 6-packs - quantities limited) - cases and kegs had to be bought from 'distributors' but you couldn't buy 6-packs nor drafts there!
Visitors from out-of-state had a hell of a time figuring where to buy what!

5. In the old days the military gave away booze for almost free

at the clubs on base. It could also be purchased cheaply in large quantities for take home use.

I can assure you, this was a not a good situation in terms of the health and welfare of military troops.
