Final Election Tally Shows Smyth (R)-Macco (D) Race Tightened

Final election tallies in the Huntington town supervisor race show an even tighter contest than initially reported on Election Night, with an unknown third-party candidate also gaining votes.

Supervisor Ed Smyth secured a second term, defeating Democrat Cooper Macco by 418 votes. Smyth finished with 21,590 votes, or 49.09 percent, while Macco received 21,172 votes, or 48.14 percent. The unofficial Election Night results had shown a 602-vote margin. Smyth ran on the Republican and Conservative lines; Macco ran solely on the Democratic line.

Working Families Party candidate Maria Delgado, a previously unknown contender whose presence on the ballot drew negative attention, ended with 1,219 votes—up from the 1,195 recorded in the unofficial returns. She was one of four little-known candidates who appeared on the WFP ballot line for various town offices.

The final counts, released by the Suffolk County Board of Elections, also tightened the race for the 18th District seat in the Suffolk County Legislature. Incumbent Stephanie Bontempi, a Republican and Conservative, edged out Democratic challenger Craig Herskowitz by just 249 votes, 11,522 to 11,273.
