Schoharie County rejects another election commissioner candidate
The Schoharie County Board of Supervisors has rejected another nominee for the Democratic Board of Elections commissioner, after a state Supreme Court justice overturned the appointment of longtime Commissioner Clifford Hay.
The vote last week prolongs an ongoing debate over who chooses the commissioner and whether 92-year-old Hay should have a new term. Some Democrats on the board still appear intent on returning Hay to the job. The matter is widening a rift between Democrats in the rural county, who are split over whether Hay deserves the job and whether the county is following the law in backing him.
For more than year, Republicans and two Democrats on the county Board of Supervisors have fought to reappoint Hay, who held the position for almost five decades.
But Hay was not nominated for a new term by the Schoharie County Democratic Committee. The committee took issue with the fact Hay doesnt use a computer and also objected to his time away from the office while living in Florida.
