Judge Rejects GOP Mayoral Candidate's Push To Raise Donor Limit

Republican candidate for mayor George McDonald was dealt a blow today in his effort to raise more money from individual donors than the city's campaign finance rules allow.

A State Supreme Court Judge ruled that the city's election law - which limits the size of campaign donations - should stand.

The judge shot down McDonald's argument that state election law - which allows for much larger contributions - supersedes the city's law.

McDonald had argued that candidates for city offices should be allowed to collect donations as large as those allowed by the state. Currently, state law allows candidates in a general election to raise almost nine times as much from individual donors as the city allows. The candidates for mayor in the city are not allowed to raise more than $4,950 from individual donors
