Rear of Assembly Chambers, State Capitol, 12:30

Supporters of a state single payer health care program will hold a news conference on Tuesday May 21 to deliver 10,000 signatures in support of the proposal.

The news conference will take place at 12:30 PM outside the rear lobby (near the LCA) of the Assembly Chamber on the third floor of the state Capitol.

More than 150 doctors, consumers, nurses, labor members, faith groups, seniors and community organizations are expected to participate in the statewide single payer lobby day being coordinated with Healthcare-NOW!NYC, Hunger Action Network of NYS, Physicians for a National Health Program (Metro Chapter) and Single Payer New York.

Speakers at the news conference will include the prime sponsors of the bill, Assemblymember Richard Gottfried and Senator Bill Perkins. The bill has already passed out of the Assembly Health Committee.

The bill has 74 co-sponsors in the Assembly and 17 in the Senate.

The bill has recently picked up endorsement from four more physician organizations: Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU; Doctors Council/SEIU; Doctors for America--New York' and National Physicians Alliance--New York. Previous sponsors include New York State Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics--District II; New York State Nurses Association; New York State AFL-CIO, IATSE Local 1, United University Professions, League of Women's Voters of New York State, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest and Metro New York Health Care for All Campaign, a health care justice coalition with close to 100 organizational members.
