Holiday trees arrive at the Capitol
By KELLY FAY
The arrival this week of New York state's holiday trees marked the start of preparations for the holiday season at the Empire State Plaza. On Wednesday, the first of two blue spruces began its journey from Wendell Ave. in Schenectady to the Empire State Plaza. The second tree was transported Thursday morning from Sawmill Rd. in Sharon Springs to its holiday location in East Capitol Park.
The Office of General Services oversees the process each year, removing the trees with a crane and transporting them on a flatbed truck to their destinations at the state Capitol. According to Heather Groll of OGS, the office receives offers year-round from people who would like to donate their tree to the holiday display.
"People give us a call or email us to let us know they have a tree they would like to be considered," Groll said. "OGS will go out and take a look at them, or look at them on Google Earth and see if the trees are appropriate for the space, big enough, full enough and easy to access."
