Assembly Democrat calling for Silver to step down as speaker
Assemblyman Michael Kearns, D-West Seneca, is calling for Assembly Speaker Sheldon, D-Manhattan, to step down as the Democratic conference leader because of his role in covering up the sexual harassment of female employees who worked for former Assemblyman Vito Lopez.
Kearns, a member of Assembly Democratic Caucus, said reading the Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE) report about the investigation behind the sexual misconduct of Lopez is what propelled him to take a stand. He said he believes other Democrats are afraid to do the same.
"The most recent investigation has revealed that Assemblyman Speaker Sheldon Silver participated in a coverup to hide egregious sexual harassment charges by former Assemblyman Vito Lopez. In light of this today, I am calling on [Silver] to resign as speaker of the Assembly. Until [Silver] resigns, I will suspend my participation in the Democratic caucus," Kearns told reporters in his office Monday afternoon.
