Two Rare Amur Leopards Join Staten Island Zoo

There are only about 40 Amur leopards in the world and two of them now call the Staten Island zoo home.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other local officials were on hand for a ribbon cutting at the new exhibit.

The zoo's two Russian male leopards are part of the world's rarest cat species. The zoo built a 4,500-square-foot habitat to breed the cats and help save them from extinction.

"It's a great, great exhibit. I think it's gonna attract hundreds of people to our Staten Island, from the North Shore to the South Shore. And as I'm watching them over your head right now prancing around, the only question that comes: is that net safe enough? But I've been assured that it is safe enough,” said Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro.
