Joe Torre elected to Baseball Hall of Fame

AP By HOWIE RUMBERG
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Retired managers Joe Torre, Tony La Russa and Bobby Cox have been unanimously elected to the baseball Hall of Fame by the expansion era committee.

Each of the inductees won more than 2,000 games in managerial careers that spanned more than four decades. Torre became the fifth manager to win at least four World Series titles.

La Russa won championships with Oakland and St. Louis. Cox led Atlanta to one championship and 14 straight division titles.

The announcement was made Monday at the winter meetings.

by the time I met him, he had already had a good major league career as a player and a lot of those well known types usually wouldn't even give you the time of day, but he always did. He also was a good tipper!

evaluate the minor leaguers and many of them were former players themselves, so I met a lot of them. (Harmon Killebrew, Enos Slaughter, Duke Snider and a few other famour ones) one day I met this guy Earl Johnson picthed for the 1946 REd Sox on their World Series team that year. We got to talking and I told him I knew that about him and he asked why. I told him I came from Germany and mom didn't believe in TV so I read a LOT of baseball stuff and collected baseball cards. He told me had a box of cards in his parents attic and they just died and he wanted to get rid of them. (about 3,000 cards) So he asked me if I wanted them and of course I did. In there, there were old cigar cards and cards from the 40's and 50's. When ever I needed money for college, I sold cards. It helped me get my BA.

When he visited the Albany Colonie Yankees in '94, 2 yrs before joining the big Yanks...I always wondered if he was scouting players or researching job prospects.
Nice guy.
