New York's good government groups are urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to take quick and comprehensive action to implement the set of recommendations released by the Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption.
Members of the Brennan Center for Justice, Citizens Union of the City of New York, Common Cause/NY, the League of Woman Voters of New York State, and the New York Public Interest Research Group issued a letter to Cuomo last Monday calling on the governor to take action to implement the recommendations put forth by the Moreland Commission.
"We are urging that the governor convene a leaders meeting with the legislative leaders this month to sort of prime the policy making pump in Albany, to get the leaders thinking about real significant reforms that need to be put in place this year," said NYPIRG Legislative Director Blair Horner. "Secondly, the governor can use his bully pulpit in the State of the State Address to advance the issues into public debate. And thirdly some of these proposals are going to cost money and the governor in his state budget has extensive budgetary powers through this state budget and we think that the budget process is the first place to go to put a down payment on some of these measures. "
Horner called the state Board of Elections "useless" when it comes to enforcing the state's campaign finance and election laws.
