NY hospital shooting inspires proposed legislation

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- A New York lawmaker has drafted a bill that would make it illegal for a stalker to use a GPS to track a victim.

Sen. Timothy Kennedy of Buffalo will outline the details of his proposal Tuesday. He'll be joined by relatives of Jacqueline Wisniewski, who was gunned down at a Buffalo hospital last year by her surgeon ex-boyfriend.

Before she was killed, Wisniewski discovered a GPS tracking device on her car that had been installed by her killer, Timothy Jorden.

Kennedy says there have been tens of thousands of such cases in recent years, but that there's no legal statute specifically addressing them. His bill would make it a felony to install electronics to track another person. Jorden committed suicide as police closed in to arrest him.

....I doubt if that is going to stop someone who is intent on murder.

Crazy spurned lover: "I want to use a GPS to track my SO so I can murder him/her, oh but darn that will be illegal so I can't do that"

At best it's just one more charge they can throw on someone.

Because it was not illegal.

Now if the law passes, then it will be illegal and enough to put him behind bars before he can hurt someone.

I think that's the intent; to make the act of placing the GPS enough to go to jail for, before it gets to murder.

...a person found placing the GPS won't actually get jail time and they will suggest that the spouse get a restraining order which is also useless.

estranged husband tracked his wife and shot her dead in her hospital bedroom. Oh, my. Should SHE have been armed in her BED? Instead of rushing to protect other patients, hospital staff should have been armed and ready to have a shoot out with him???? Yeah, right.
