Candidate runs as alternative to WFP for Cuomo-protest voters

Jimmy Vielkind

ALBANY—Here's Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins' updated gubernatorial pitch: If you're fed up with Andrew Cuomo, cast your protest vote for me, not the Working Families Party.

“There's a lot of anger out there and people are looking for a protest vote,” said Hawkins, a teamster from Syracuse who won just under 60,000 votes in his 2010 gubernatorial run on the Green Party line.

The W.F.P., which backed Cuomo, received 154,835.

But there's lots of chatter among W.F.P. Leaders and partisans of their dissatisfaction with Cuomo, a Democrat, who they feel has not delivered on campaign pledges to create fairer economic policy and implement a system of public campaign finance. (Cuomo has countered by pointing to school aid increases and a pilot program for the state comptroller election, the biggest step forward in 30 years.)

I would consider voting for another candidate that had the WFP backing. I can't stand Cuomo. That said, most of the republicans who run in the general are loony tunes so I hold my nose and vote for Cuomo anyway.
