affect removal of hosts: earlier hosts can remove later ones but later ones cannot remove earlier ones

So e.g. the lead host can simply appoint some additional host(s) -- though in some cases it might be wise to obtain group approval

came off a few of the main forums to give others a chance - stayed on a few, lead host on gardening only at this point - seems manageable.

Voter registration is ongoing too -- which reminds me: you came up in a discussion earlier this week. One of my old activist friends came to town Wednesday and we went out to lunch with another mutual old friend -- who remembered seeing you and me on the street when we were doing some campaign doorknocking over by northgate a few years back

I'm getting old.

It'll be important again in 2012 to counter all the voter ID bullshit. They're of course trying to pull that crap here, too.

Edit: maybe after the hellOdaze we can have a triangle get-together?

to prevent an override of the guv's veto

The wackos then set out to run resolutions from county commissioners asking the GA to pass local bills giving individual counties the authority to enact local voter ID regulations. It's my understanding we have an opinion from the state AG that such local bills wouldn't pass constitutional muster, since voting requirements for statewide offices would vary county-by-county

But they're doing it in so many other states, it's worrisome for 2012.

We need to vote out the whackos in NC ASAP.

My people were among the very first Euopeans to settle NC. Even know where most of them are buried.

Know a lot of the connections since then that aren't widely documented.

I have a wonderful friend who's a native Ashevillian. I'm disabled and she's the cousin of a neighbor who's also a native. She started cleaning for me once a week 3 years ago and we've become fast friends, which is wonderful on many levels. One of the ways in which it's wonderful is all of the people who've influenced her before me are conservatives (my neighbor and her adult son are the only rogue liberals/Democrats in the family). I've been working on my conservative friend.....among other things, she happened to be here the day of the awesome Bernie Sanders filibuster! I blasted it on all TVs -- she couldn't get away from it. She thought he made tons of sense and actually said she'd vote for him if he ran here! I explained that he's one of the more liberal legislators and he's one of the few who consistently watches out for regular folks, for the 99%. She's all about Bernie now. And she totally gets that she's part of the 99% and her Republican legislators (and our blue dog Health Shuler) represent the 1% and NOT us! (And yes, I've educated her about #Occupy, and she gets it.)

And occasionally I have to stop her and ask for a translation. She cracks me up when she says she's "fixin' to....." I'll have to get her to remind me of the couple of words I was going to use to confuse the hell out of friends....can't remember where I wrote them down. They were southern doozies!

Forming an immediate future using "fixing to" is very similar to using "going to". They are older than the more-formal "will" and "shall" forms which are not all that different linguistically.

Double modals like "might could" are very common in speech, though rare in writing. In this case, think of "might" with the meaning of "probably".

None of these forms are illiterate, though they are less common outside the South. Related forms are common everywhere, and people thing nothing of saying things like, "I used to do that."

Southern spoken English uses a lot subjunctives and even more quasi-subjunctive constructions. These have their roots in the speech of Northern England and of Scotland.

A favorite example of how it can turn out in real conversation:

"If they had just done that, you would have already done been back in business."

I saw you and Triana upthread and I have to say that I really admire all the work you do getting out the vote.

The thing that really gets me now is the redistricting going on. When I think about it or hear about it, my blood pressure starts to rise and I feel so hopeless and helpless. I have to block it and pull away. I don't think I appreciated how good we had it in this state before the republicans took over. I know you hate all this "woe is me" and that's why I so admire how hard you work and all the good you do. Thank you.

Anyway, we should all get together again and complain and plan and have some laughs.
