8. modern republicans are defined by their grievances

They will double down on their grievances over and over, because that's all they've got. They cannot govern. They have no policy ideas except those that either maintain or emphasize their grievances and persecution complex. The leading lights of their party rise to the top by performing political stunts to outdo one another in their quest to be purer expressions of grievance. They are permanently disaffected, and cannot let go of their disaffection. They fight the very things that would improve their lives because they don't want their (or anyone else's) lives improved.
