CANTON, Ohio (WJW) A Stark County man is facing charges that include attempted murder after investigators said he tried to shoot a Canton police officer at the Walmart on Atlantic Boulevard NE on Thursday afternoon. ... Store security called police after watching 21-year Shane Newman and his accused accomplice, 23-year-old Katarina Jeffrey, starting to leave the store with items they did not pay for.
The responding officer took the two suspects to the stores loss prevention office, where he searched Newman. ... On video from the officers body camera, he asked Newman, do you have anything on you that I need to know about? Why is your hand in your pocket? ... I have a snap phone, Newman responded. ... Im going to pat you down real quick, all right, the officer said. ... Thats cool, Newman responded. ... Newman then voluntarily handed over a small container he had his pocket that investigators said contained illegal drugs.
A camera inside the office was recording when Jeffrey asked, are we going to jail? ... Not unless something crazy happens, the officer responded. ... A short time later, the officer asked a dispatcher to run the two suspects social security numbers. ... The video then shows Newman turning his back to the camera, pulling the gun from a bag around his shoulder and attempting to shoot the officer, but the weapon did not fire.
Investigators said a courageous and quick-thinking Walmart security employee was able to pull the gun away from Newman, and the police officer then overpowered and restrained the 21-year-old with help from employees.

Canton police officials say two suspects are in custody after one of them attempted to shoot an officer during a shoplifting incident at Walmart on Thursday.
According to a release, the incident happened at about 1:45 p.m. at the Walmart located at 3200 Atlantic Blvd. NE. An officer was processing a man and a woman suspected of shoplifting inside the stores loss prevention office when the male suspect produced a handgun and attempted to fire it at the officer.
The weapon did not discharge, police said.
With the assistance of a Walmart loss prevention employee, the officer was able to detain the suspect, identified as Shane C.L. Newman, 21, following a brief struggle. The officer was not injured.
Newman has been charged with attempt to commit murder, felonious assault on a peace officers, robbery, aggravated possession of drugs and having weapons under disability.
His accomplice, Katerina D. Jeffrey, 23, has been charged with complicity to commit robbery.
