Ohio teacher told principal using students' preferred pronouns violated her religion. She was forced to resign, lawsuit says

The Alliance Defending Freedom said the teacher, Vivian Geraghty, should not have been put in a position to choose “between her faith and her job.”

A former Ohio middle school teacher said she was forced to resign after she told her boss that she would not address students by their preferred pronouns because it violates her religious beliefs.

The teacher, Vivian Geraghty, is now suing Jackson Memorial Middle School's principal, the Board of Education, and two district employees.

Geraghty, a Christian, worked at the school in Massillon, Ohio, as an English language arts teacher up until her resignation on Aug. 26. Before her departure, she "taught her class while remaining consistent with her religious practices and scientific understanding concerning human identity, gender, and sex," states a federal lawsuit filed on Monday.

About a week before she resigned, two of Geraghty's students requested that she use names associated "with their new gender identities rather than their legal names," the suit states. One of the students also wanted to be addressed by their preferred pronoun. The lawsuit notes that the school had adopted a policy that required teachers to use the preferred pronouns of students.

1. A week before her resignation would have been August 17th.

Often occur before school officially starts so that these conversations with the 'responsible' adults can happen in private and awkward corrections can be avoided when other students are around.

All efforts are made to get the adults on board before school starts to minimize the risk of bullying and other negative behaviors towards the transgender youth.

My transgender niece, now in junior high, had these meetings with teachers, counselors, and administration before school started each year for several years when she began to live completely under her new name and identity.

The school was likely using this best practice.

The teacher needs to read the book a little more closely, because I'll bet that she owns at least one poly -cotton blend piece of clothing that she has worn to school, which is, as we all know, a death penalty offense.

2. She needs to come up with a better name for her new anti-pronoun religion.

I'm pretty sure that the name she has chosen is already taken.

How does her religion feel about adverbs?

The lawsuit also alleges that the policy is not fairly enforced and that Carter is allowed to avoid using pronouns entirely.

One really great way to compromise is to just use the new name. No pronouns necessary. If she went from Christine to Charles. Just say, “Charles, what’s the answer?” Charles did you understand the question. Why did you forget your homework? So many ways to be respectful and keep the beliefs. I guess since I work with a transgender who has been so incredibly patient with us. I find this whole situation very easy.

6. Using the new name would also "violate her religious beliefs."

She would insist on deadnaming the student if the new name didn’t correspond to the “correct” gender according to the teacher’s religion.

Against one's religion.

This teacher should know to leave her religious views at the door and focus on education. It's not about her and her feelings.

by referring to her as “it,” “they,” and “he” interchangeably, addressing it as “Mr.” at will, etc. When the POS tries to send a kid to the principal’s office, they should say it’s against their religion to refer to him by its chosen pronouns.

The flip side of the “religious freedom” coin is not one the right wingers would like. They’re not really into “religious freedom” they’re into “I want it my way.”
