In OKC, Roosevelt Middle School teachers say lack of student discipline could mean departure

Friday was the last day of school for more than 45,000 Oklahoma City school district students and the end of the road for potentially dozens of teachers and support staff at Roosevelt Middle School, where student misconduct went largely unchecked over the last several months at the direction of district officials, several teachers told The Oklahoman.

“Some of the behavior I’ve experienced is intolerable, and a lot of teachers don’t want to come back because of the environment,” said one of three Roosevelt teachers who spoke to The Oklahoman, but asked that their names not be used for fear of retaliation. “The students know what they can and can’t get away with. It’s clear to them.”

One of the Roosevelt teachers predicted a mass defection of staff from the school over the next two weeks.

“You’re going to see a 70 percent turnover in this building,” the teacher said.

If that prediction even comes close to fruition, say 50%, that school is in big trouble next year.

1. Reading the comments they are blaming " the liberals"

But the reason why they stopped dealing with behavior is because they want to destroy public schools in Oklahoma.

I substitute teach in San Francisco. A good school has good leadership. One school I worked in was horrible because they had a weak principal, no leadership and the teachers were treated badly. The good teachers left the school and people are pulling their kids out and transferring them. Leadership at the top with fair discipline make a big difference.

3. Hard to tell from this article, but....

it seems that the goal is to reduce suspensions and to create a new discipline code. Perhaps the new code should have been in place first! And there is no excuse for the shoddy and misplaced paperwork. That is just incompetence.

Suspensions can be reduced if other procedures are put into place such as a building-wide code of conduct that is uniformly enforced. It takes a while for everyone to get on the same page with it. Too many kids see suspensions as a kind of "reward". Act like a fool and get out of school. It's a mini-vacation for them.

I guarantee you if I got suspended my parents would not allow it to be a mini vacation.

It could be that the parents are at work though. Then the kids are playing video games (or whatever) all day. I think schools are trying to get away from suspensions and trying to keep the kids in school when possible. Understandable.
