7-year-old's mom sues Portland schools for $7.5 million, despite employee's acquittal
The mother of a 7-year-old developmentally disabled girl -- who said she was sexually abused in a school restroom by a Portland Public Schools employee -- filed a $7.5 million lawsuit against the school district Monday on her daughters behalf.
The mother disagrees with a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge who in March, after an intense six-day trial, found Brett Christy-Hamilton not guilty of first-degree sexual abuse.
The girl has severe speech impediments and was called to the stand. She was unable to describe any sexual touching. That included the allegations that Christy-Hamilton molested her on the toilet under the guise of helping her wipe at her Southeast Portland school in November 2015.
Christy-Hamilton was the girl's paraeducator, a district employee assigned to assist her at school.
