Multnomah GOP challenges legality of Eudaly's voting drive

The Multnomah County Republican Party said Monday it is seeking an investigation of Commissioner Chloe Eudaly's plan to allow city workers to conduct a voter turnout drive while on the job.

Eudaly last week invited city employees to join a door-knocking effort in city precincts where fewer than half of voters have cast ballots in recent elections.

"To protect the integrity of our democracy, we must recognize this plain fact and commit ourselves to action," Eudaly said in her email invite, adding that the canvassing event is "voluntary, non-partisan and content-neutral."

The low-voting precincts are predominately in East Portland, according to data provided by Eudaly's office. Those areas all went for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, but are much more favorable to Republican candidates than the deep-blue areas of close-in Portland neighborhoods.

1. I have to agree

I live in Portland. I phone bank for Democrats, and hope for a tremendous blue wave.

That being said, the potential for abuse in using city employees to GOTV is clear. Republicans are right that the potential for abuse is evident, even if it is not exercised. If a conservative suggested this, liberal Portland would scream! Deciding where to canvass is a political decision.

City Council has not appropriated the funds for this project. Eudaly is acting beyond her authority as a Commissioner.

BAD IDEA!

It was a really bad idea. What must she have been thinking?
