Oregon officials approve $50,000 ethics case settlement with Cylvia Hayes
The Oregon Government Ethics Commission approved an agreement Friday to settle the ethics violations of former Oregon First Lady Cylvia Hayes for a civil penalty of $50,000.
The nine-page order marks the closing chapter of one of the biggest ethics scandals in recent Oregon history. The commission voted 7-0, with commissioner Kamala Shugar abstaining.
"Once again I will say I apologize for the damage made by my mistakes," Hayes said, when commissioners pressed her for a statement of contrition.
The deal doesn't mean Hayes will pay the full amount.
She has a Chapter 13 bankruptcy case pending, which means the $50,000 fine will be part of a repayment plan for 36 months. Commissioners don't know what the final amount of repayment will be.
