Oregon Governor Sends State Police to Portland for Protests

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown declared a state of emergency Friday as she announced that state troopers and sheriff's deputies would be sent to Portland through the weekend to help police, in the state’s largest city, monitor a weekend rally by the right-wing group Proud Boys and counter-protests by liberal groups.

Portland has been roiled by often violent protests for more than three months following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Demonstrations that went into a lull during Oregon's recent wildfires resumed this week, fueled by a Kentucky grand jury’s decision to not indict officers in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor.

Brown told reporters she is exercising her gubernatorial authority to place Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese and Oregon State Police Superintendent Travis Hampton in charge of Portland's public safety on Saturday and Sunday. Brown said that Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler supports the plan.

1. The protesters really need to move their cause from the street to the city officials and

Governors offices and of course the ballot box. A cause has more than one phase..they are way beyond the protest phase...just my opinion

I mean really...what at this juncture are they accomplishing?

3. They need both

Neither side will come to diddly squat without the other.

The only reason the elected's have made even the minimal progress they have made so far is because of the pressure from the streets.
But the only way the street has any effect is through voting and the electeds.

If either one stops, it all comes to nothing.

2. As far as the Portland protests are concerned, this is really getting redundant. The best protest

right now is VOTING. Getting out the vote, registering people to vote, call banking, etc

We are six weeks away from the election
