VanGordon, Pelroy maintain leads in latest vote counts

Eugene City Council candidate Jennifer Smith claimed victory over John Barofsky after the third round of Lane County primary election returns dropped May 20, but several races remained too close to call.

In a statement, Smith, president of the labor union representing classified University of Oregon employees, attributed her win to “the power of solidarity and community organizing. Our grassroots, volunteer-led campaign ran on our progressive values and our belief that a better Eugene is possible."

Two Lane County commissioner races — between Commissioner David Loveall and Springfield Mayor Sean VanGordon and Commissioner Heather Buch and business owner Jake Pelroy — remained too close to call the day after the election.

In the Springfield race, VanGordon's lead grew from 51.35% to 51.36%. In the East Lane race, Pelroy's lead shrank from 49.9% to 48.56%.
