A Monroeville man, who is a former United States Postal Service worker, has pleaded guilty to mail theft charges in Pittsburgh federal court after he was found to have stolen more than $6 million in checks addressed to Pittsburgh businesses, the United States Attorney’s office in Pittsburgh announced Wednesday.

Ahmad Omar Shareef, 35, was indicted on four counts, according to a release. District Judge Christy Criswell Wiegand scheduled his sentencing for March.

Between October 2023 and April of this year, Shareef took checks that were supposed to be delivered to Pittsburgh area businesses while working as a human resource officer at the Bloomfield Post Office, according to the release. Using an encrypted messaging app, Shareef sold the checks to individuals in other cities.

Officials uncovered that Shareef stole more than $6 million in checks, according to the release. Shareef admitted to sending buyers nearly $250,000, with him earning $20,000 from that scheme.

Sheesh! This guy makes $20K on the scheme and how many years will he get in federal prison? And since when do human resource officers handle the mail in ways that they can remove checks, or take the envelopes out of the sorting stream? He was only employed there for 7 months before he got caught.

It's possible they only have proof that he stole checks between October 2023 and April 2024.
