Sam Bigham has had an interest in public service as long as he can remember. But that’s not too far into the past.

The 23-year-old who recalls organizing his toys in his childhood home into a miniature city and playing the SimCity video game where he would attempt to build a metropolis will now have a chance to do similar work in real life — as the mayor of Carnegie.

“I guess it's just something I've always been interested in,” Mr. Bigham said in a recent interview at Carnegie Coffee Company. “I took the time as a kid to learn about history, governing and politics, and paid attention to the news. It's always been the kind of work that's appealed to me.”

Mr. Bigham, a Democrat, will be sworn in on Monday — just over a week before his 24th birthday — making him among the youngest currently serving mayors in Pennsylvania as well as the youngest ever in Carnegie, about 10 minutes west of Downtown Pittsburgh.

Although he acknowledges his age is attention-grabbing, Mr. Bigham said he is well prepared for the job, pointing to a resume that includes work in various levels of government and in the Carnegie community.

He’s also earned the confidence of other elected officials who serve or represent Carnegie, where he’s been involved in the local government since high school, serving as a junior councilperson, volunteering at countless events, and, most recently, taking on the role as executive director of the Carnegie Community Development Corporation.
