Moody's Says Temple U.'s Hospital Losses Are Threatening the University's Finances

This is one of many reasons why PA. needs to get the federal medicaid/medical assistance expansion underway ASAP, instead of looking for ways to delay it.

Moody's is warning Temple University that continual deficits at their hospital are threatening the finances of the University. Part of the problem is that Temple serves a large population that does not have health insurance. They regularly have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars treating gunshot victims without receiving payment.

Some universities (such as U. Penn) have separated themselves from their hospital. Penn was afraid that malpractice claims could go after the University's large endowment. Other universities (such as U. of Va.) make large profits from their hospital.
