Penn. Dem vows to veto evangelical ‘In God We Trust’ bill ‘imposing Christianity’ in govt.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said this week that he would veto a measure that would force county council members to display “In God We Trust” in their chambers.

“This has been a movement by the right-wing evangelical Christians across the country basically to impose Christianity only in courthouses and schools buildings,” Fitzgerald explained to KDKA radio on Tuesday. “And there’s one on county council, Sue Means, that’s pushing this.”

He pointed out that people did not need to be a “right-wing evangelical Christian” to be welcomed in Allegheny County.

“We welcome Hindus and Jews and Muslims and atheists,” he said. “This would not be the signal that we want to send as a community, that we’re exclusionary and not inviting to people of all stripes.”

We do not trust in God. Think about it.

When you pledge to god you are expressing doubt.

In trust there is no need to pledge.

He don't believe in the right to force Jeezuz on the rest of us. He must be either a commie or a fellow traveler. I wouldn't even vote for him to take the coins out of parking meters.

Hindus believe in gods.

Buddhists believe in a higher power and don't particularly care what that power is called.

Atheists and agnostics may feel excluded.

Just in a snarky mood today. Good, important post.

Only right wing Christians are pushing these displays. Jews aren't. Muslims aren't. Hindus aren't. Buddhists aren't. And you know atheists aren't. The Christians know that if they pushed "In Jesus we trust" it wouldn't get on the runway. They think they are being inclusive, but instead, they are being intimidating.

Fortunately, as post 8 shows, they are not in charge there. My sympathies to the parts of our country under the heel of the God phonies.

Pa. county council rejects 'In God We Trust' motto

Posted: Sep 10, 2014 8:03 AM EDT Updated: Sep 10, 2014 9:31 AM EDT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A Pennsylvania county council has voted 8-6 against posting the national motto, "In God We Trust," in its chambers.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald had threatened to veto the measure, which he called "a movement by the right-wing evangelical Christians across the country basically to impose Christianity" in public buildings. Fitzgerald is a Democrat, as are the eight council members who opposed the display, which would also have included Pennsylvania's state motto "Virtue, Liberty and Independence" and another U.S. motto, "E Pluribus Unum."

All five Republicans on council voted for the display, as did Democrat Bill Robinson.

A Democrat who co-sponsored the bill, Councilman Charles Martoni, voted against it saying, "The more I looked at it, it's unnecessary." Another Democrat co-sponsor, Councilman John Palmiere, didn't attend Tuesday's meeting. Council has 15 members.
