De-annexation bill clears Tennessee Senate at the end of session
NASHVILLE — During a last-minute hustle to adjourn, state senators passed and bill on the floor that was “sent to summer camp” at the last minute last year, and sets a deadline for city residents around the state to remove themselves from those cities.
Sen. Bo Watson, R-Hixson, has slowly walked his legislation to allow citizens to vote to remove themselves from city borders, and eventually the tax rolls, through a process known as de-annexation.
On Wednesday, the final day of the 2017 session, the measure passed 29-3 on a near party-line vote, sending it to the House, which is expected to take up the bill during the 2018 session.
He described the years-long process the legislation has had as "circuitous" and "comical."
