Judge issues temporary restraining order on MSCS election alignment

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Nashville judge issued a temporary restraining order Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the ordered election realignment of the Memphis-Shelby County (MSCS) Board of Education in 2026.

Wednesday's order continues a contentious political and legal battle over the future of the MSCS board that could determine whether five board members can keep their seats until 2028 or face early elections.

The five board members facing shortened terms were elected in 2024 to four-year terms. The Shelby County Board of Commissioners' decision to realign school board elections with county races in 2026 effectively shortened those terms by two years. The seats affected were those of districts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.

Education districts 1, 6, 8, and 9 were already up for election in 2026.
