Republicans file ‘fetal heartbeat’ abortion ban, as early as 6 weeks

Hours after Texas Republican lawmakers finalized some of the toughest abortion restrictions in the country Thursday, a bill to ban abortions as early as six weeks, when a fetal heartbeat can be detected, was filed.

State Rep. Phil King, R-Weatherford, filed House Bill 59, which would ban abortions “if it has been determined… that the unborn child has a detectable heartbeat.” North Dakota is the only other country to pass ‘fetal heartbeat’ legislation, and it is being challenged as unconstitutional in court.

A call to King’s office after hours was not answered.

Gov. Rick Perry signed a package of abortion restrictions earlier in the day. Perry called it a “celebratory day” during the ceremony. The law bans abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, requires doctors performing the procedure to have admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 miles, forces abortion clinics to meet standards for ambulatory surgical centers and regulates how doctors administer abortion-inducing drugs.

Small enough to crawl into a vagina, that is.

Let's see, two frustrated fascists with Mengele ambitions joined by a female female impersonator.

But mention background checks on private gun sales - whoa, Katie, bar the door!

I never could stand Jeanie Morrison. Once Goodhair is gone, I doubt she'll have any muscle.

If they are willing to force children to be born, then they need to step up and force all who are anti-choice to adopt them. As a matter of fact, require any adoptions to be only for children here in Texas. They also should have no say in gender, race or age. You get whatever kid is handed to you. And you pay all expenses. That should take care of the backlog of children in foster homes.

The Republicans will keep this anti-abortion stuff going until they are a powerless minority party. Those women voters who think that the Republicans aren't interested in outlawing abortion and restricting access to contraception should stop kidding themselves about the nature of the party they've been supporting.
