Houston judge sentences Aryan gang leader to 30 years

HOUSTON — A top leader of the white supremacist Aryan Brotherhood of Texas has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to racketeering conspiracy.

Charles Lee Roberts was sentenced in federal court in Houston on Thursday for his May 10 guilty plea. He had admitted to participating in a systematic use of murder, robbery, arson, kidnapping and drug trafficking to support the gang.

U.S. District Judge Sim Lake also ordered the 68-year-old Beaumont man to serve five years of supervised release should he complete his prison sentence. Roberts could have drawn a life sentence.

Roberts was among nearly three dozen alleged gang members charged in a sweeping indictment unsealed in November that accuses them of crimes ranging from capital murder to drug trafficking.
